Chapter 20
Travis
It isn’t until after Ace clears everyone out of the garage that I finally start to relax — or at least unclench my fists.
I had wanted to come here tonight because I wanted to know what Ace was really up to. Now I’m even more worried he’s in over his head.
I don’t even notice the pain in my face until I see Julie looking at me with a horrified expression. I rub my hand against my mouth, and when I pull it away, there’s a streak of blood there.
For once, the sight of it doesn’t set me off. Ever since the explosion, blood has been one of my triggers, but tonight, the bright red stain across the back of my hand gives me a sense of satisfaction. That guy deserved it.
To be honest, I didn’t know what was happening at first, but I quickly put two and two together. That was the video Julie kept talking about, the one that sent her crawling back to this shit hole.
It’s hard to describe what I’d felt when I heard her little moans coming out of that piece of shit’s phone. All I could think about was how she used to moan like that for us. By the end of that summer, Ace and I could play her like an instrument — make her sing like a cello.
But then things had all gone to shit. It got too intense, and we all got a little weird. My dad died, I freaked out. We fell apart.
So, when I heard that video playing, it brought back too many memories. I was pissed at that fat fuck, obviously, but mostly I was mad at myself, for falling down this damn rabbit hole again, for letting Ace and Julie back under my skin.
Because why did I think this was going to end any better than last time? Nothing had changed except that we were older. I had a bum knee and Julie had a sex tape, and Ace had what I’m pretty sure was an illegal business run out of his garage.
What a fucking mess we were.
Hell, maybe we belonged together after all.
Julie approaches me slowly, holding out her hand tentatively. It reminds me of the way you approach a dog that might bite.
I shake my head and take Julie’s hand in mine, pulling her gently to me.
“I’m not going to bite,” I say. Although I feel like doing more than biting now, with all that adrenalin still coursing through me.
“I know. But your lip…”
She reaches up and touches my lip. The sight of the blood on her finger is almost enough to trigger me this time, but I force myself to look away.
“Sit,” she says. She presses her fingers to my chest and pushes me backward until I’m sitting on the table we’d just been playing at.
She turns to Ace. “Do you have anything I can clean this with?”
“It’s fine,” I tell her, trying to push her hand away. The way she’s standing between my
